Sciatica pain relief is a commonly sought treatment for a syndrome that many suffer from, which includes an irritation of the sciatic nerve and can cause leg pain, numbness, and tingling. It can hurt to sit, stand, or walk. 

The sciatic nerve is formed of many nerve roots which combine in the low back and run all the way down the leg, becoming the longest nerve in the body. Because of that fact, it is often susceptible to compression.

The nerve sits directly under the Gluteus Maximus (larger muscle on top) and Piriformis (smaller muscle under Gluteus Maximus) in the buttocks.

So, when the Piriformis muscle is tight (from running, walking. or sitting for long periods), it can cause compression of the nerve.

It can also be a symptom of a more serious issue with a disc, such as herniation. Always consult your doctor.

Pain Symptoms

Symptoms often include leg pain, numbness or tingling, burning sensations or muscle spasms.

Pain can be very intense or dull and aching. It may come and go, sometimes with weeks or months in between the pain cycles.

5 Sciatica Pain Relief Tips

1.  Lower back massage- lower back massage therapy benefits pain and helps to relax muscles by working trigger points that refer pain to the low back area, to help release the restrictions, and ease pain.

2. Ice - helps to ease irritation and inflammation

3. Stretching - moving knee of the side that hurts toward opposite shoulder helps stretch the muscles around the nerve, easing pressure and providing sciatica pain relief

4. Heat - a heating pad will help relax the nerve and muscles around it to allow rest

5. Pressure - light pressure around the nerve provides better blood flow to the area, allowing faster healing- simply roll up a hand towel to a 3x4 inch ball and place it in the area, laying on a flat surface for 5-10 minutes

It is important to take immediate action when you first feel the sciatic pain coming on. The sooner you seek treatment, the better. The longer you wait, the worse it can get.

Your physician may prescribe pain medication, and/or instruct you on specific stretching exercises that can help. He/She may instruct bed rest or walking to facilitate healing.

With massage therapy, the therapist will often gently work the muscles along the sciatic nerve pathway (where the leg pain is) to help increase circulation and to increase the oxygen and nutrient flow to the area to facilitate healing.

While you are experiencing the sciatic pain, try to get massage at least once per week to assist healing. Afterwords, once every two weeks or once per month, whatever you can afford. This will keep the area loosened and may prevent recurrence.

Nerve inflammation or irritation can be horrible, but massage therapy can help ease the pain, and ease it quickly.
